Lessons from the River

BY RADHANATH SWAMI

When we sit on a bank of the river specifically the Ganga, and we observe how the current is flowing towards the sea. There are unlimited waves, ripples, little whirlpools coming and going, as soon as they come into being, they practically immediately cease to be. And the great saints has taught us that, that is the way life is.…

Integrity is to Live by the Truth

BY RADHANATH SWAMI

For the cheap things that come and go, we are willing to compromise morality, ethics and basic sacred principles. Integrity is to live by the truth. To live according to sacred ideals, even in the face of temptation or great risk. This is the education that should be foundational to everything else we learn and this is what the Bhagavad-gita stresses. What is our relationship with God, what is our relationship with each other on the spiritual level. To love is the…

What is Envy?

BY RADHANATH SWAMI

What is envy? Envy means, "I want to be seen as important and great and if anyone is a threat to my egoistic idea then there is negativity towards that person in my thoughts, in my words, in my actions.."

But if devotees put humility as their goal, as their aspiration, then there is no question of envy. Therefore, the cardinal principle of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's movement is this verse from Sikshashtakam 'trinad api suni cena taror api…

Foot in My Mouth

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

With six new sannyasis made within one week, the news spreads like wildfire. When Madhudvisa hears about it in San Francisco, he recognizes that these are the senior men in the movement. He wants to be a part of this upward progression and calls up the Los Angeles temple to speak with Prabhupada.

"Can I…

Krishna Smashes Your False Ego

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

Within a month the Gray Street temple is always filled with people, including John and Barbara, who are now staunch supporters of Maharaja's program. New devotees join. Subrata, who had been going to drafting school, moves into the temple within a week of meeting Visnujana. There's also a tall, skinny Texan with a high, squeaky voice. Everyone calls him Motorhead, because he's always into cars and engines.

Dayal…

Inspiration

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

Among the many vendors sitting on their blankets early in the New Year is Robin Ferris, a former chemistry major, who manufactures his own incense. He and his wife had met devotees out on the West Coast during the summer. They both liked the devotees, the prasadam, and the philosophy. So out of sympathy for the movement Robin decides to shave his head, wear a sikha, and sell Prabhupada's books along with his…

Visnujana's Training

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

In order to keep his new recruits mindful of the spiritual codes of conduct, Visnujana Maharaja posts this notice in the new Dancey Street temple.

ALWAYS REMEMBER WE ARE DEALING WITH KRISHNA!

1. Bring nothing dirty, or garbage, or leftover prasadam, into the kitchen.

2. Knock before entering, and close the door entering and exiting.

3. Wash hands before touching anything and…

A Devotee is Silent

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

June, 1971

Once again, the Ratha-yatra mood has overtaken the devotees of New Jagannath Puri under Kesava's new leadership. Ratha-yatra is always a big event in San Francisco, and Jayananda is always the main man. He's the one who gets all the permits, figures out everything that has to be done, and then organizes it. He does all that plus assemble the carts with his crew. Instead of being an administrator,…

Prasadam Pastime

In the spring of 1971, the San Francisco temple president, Chitsukhananda, receives Prabhupada's blessings to leave for Mexico to start a center in Latin America. Chitsukhananda has been temple president since Madhudvisa's departure, and it was largely due to his efforts that the temple was relocated from the small storefront on Frederick Street to the much larger facility on 455 Valencia Street in the infamous Mission district. Due to the rough neighborhood, however, it is always necessary to… Continue

Engaging Everyone in Devotional Service

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

As devotees begin to show up at the temple before Ratha-yatra, Jayananda is so busy that many of them don't even see him. He is usually out getting equipment and parts for building the carts, or in the garage fixing a sankirtana vehicle.

With devotees arriving from all over America, the temple is quickly overcrowded, so most of the devotees stay down the street in a hotel which Kesava has arranged. Jayananda…

Jayananda Special

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

Although he is the senior-most devotee, Jayananda prefers not to give classes on a regular basis because he's not one for long intellectual discussions. Indeed, he thinks that he doesn't know as much as the others. When he does give class, he talks a lot about Srila Prabhupada. Sometimes he may deviate from the text just to…

Strict Chanting Commitment

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

San Francisco June 26, 1971

Devotees are overjoyed to hear that Prabhupada will soon be arriving. When Jayananda hears the news over at the cart site, he immediately picks up a mrdanga and starts a kirtan. He is so thrilled to hear that Prabhupada is coming.

Final arrangements are still being made as everyone anticipates Prabhupada's arrival at the airport. Devotees stay up all night cutting vegetables,…

Qualities

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

Jayananda is so friendly that everyone who meets him likes him immediately. Everyone he has contact with thinks that he is a wonderful person. That's because he is never petty or inimical. He always speaks well of one and all, because he is able to see the good in everyone. He can see the lowly alcoholic in the street and see the good in such a person, as well as how to engage him in Krsna consciousness. He brings out the…

Going Outside ISKCON

BY GOUR GOVINDA SWAMI

“It is a fact that if an elevated Vaishnava is there, then one should go and take his association. There is no harm in that. But in this case there is a danger that the discipline in our organization will be affected adversely. If the leaders are going outside of ISKCON, how will we be able to maintain discipline? Srila Prabhupada has formed this society, and this threat to his society will only cause him pain.”

Then in another letter he…

Jayananda Prabhu as President

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

Berkeley August, 1971

Lochan dasa and Jayananda are the two senior devotees in charge, and they work well together. But Lochan wants to step down from the temple president's post, so the devotees mandate that Jayananda become the new president. Everyone loves Jayananda due to his consummate dedication to the service of the Vaisnavas, especially the new bhaktas and bhaktins. He is always careful to ensure that…

Let Cows Die Naturally

BY SRILA PRABHUPADA

So we are making preparation that keep the cows, protect the cows, and when the cow dies, the flesh-eater may take it away. So he can take the skin, he can take the hoof, he can take the horn, he can take the flesh, everything, whatever he likes. Because when it is dead, it is no more useful for us. So the others, who are interested with the skin, in…

Bhakti-Yoga Mobile

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

San Antonio September 1971

Visnujana's Bhakti-Yoga-Mobile is causing trouble with the landlady, who lives in the apartment underneath. She is upset that a big red bus is always parked in front of her home. Due to her shyness, she is not inclined to approach the devotees directly, so she calls the police instead. When the police arrive, she wants to soften them up because she likes the devotees very much.…

South Indian Vaishnava Priest

BY VAIYASAKI DASA

(From Radha-Damodara Vilasa)

With so many persons in the cramped little temple apartment, sometimes tempers flare. Visnujana always remains transcendental but it's difficult for the other devotees. Dwijhari likes to get into deep philosophical arguments with Visnujana. "I didn't ask to come into existence. I didn't have any choice. Where's the question of free will? Nobody asked me." Being a passionate person, Dwijahari fires off these arguments in…
